The Beauty of Choosing Well: A Conversation with Rahel, Founder of Oh You Pretty Things

When Rahel founded Oh You Pretty Things, it wasn’t just about offering natural skincare — it was about rewriting the story of what beauty means. After years in conventional beauty PR and a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she shifted toward a more conscious and honest approach to wellness. Based in Switzerland, her curated online store is a haven for niche, beautifully designed products that reflect both innovation and integrity. In this conversation, Rahel shares what inspires her, how she chooses the brands she stocks and the rituals that keep her grounded.

Tell us about yourself — what inspired you to create Oh You Pretty Things?

I worked in PR for conventional beauty brands for many years, but never gave much thought to sustainability or questionable or even dangerous ingredients. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I took a long, hard look at my whole life: what is good for me, what do I want to put on my skin and inside my body? Then came the switch to natural cosmetics.

How do you choose the brands and products you stock? What values or qualities do you always look for?

Generally speaking, I have little interest in offering another of the big players in the natural cosmetics market that are also carried by all other retailers. I am fascinated by niche products, by the new. Which brands are not yet available in Switzerland, which products do I find innovative and so exciting that I want to present them on the Swiss market? I decide entirely on gut instinct and have very rarely been wrong to date. However, there is one important criterion: the product must have a good design, as I use it every day and keep it in my bathroom.

Are there any ingredients or products you're especially excited about right now?

1. Biotechnologically obtained active ingredients
‘Green science’ is king: natural ingredients from fermentation (e.g. vegan hyaluronic acid, ferment extracts, plant-based collagen).

2. Adaptogens & mushroom active ingredients
Reishi, chaga, tremella – in creams and serums as moisturising and anti-stress boosters. Particularly in soothing, barrier strengthening products.

3. Barrier care with plant oils
Barrier protection with gentle oils (e.g. hemp, wild rose, squalane) in minimalist formulas. The goal: anti-inflammatory and microbiome balance

4. Postbiotics & prebiotics
Focus on the skin microbiome: products contain fermented extracts, inulin or special plant sugars to support the skin flora.

5. The evolotion of SPF products
Mineral filters that do not leave white residue – for example, through special coatings or oil textures (dry oils). Because sunscreen is increasingly being marketed as a yearround anti-ageing must-have.

Skincare rituals in the morning, evening or both?

I have to get ready quickly in the morning and I don't wear make-up 9 days out of 10, so my routine is rather minimalistic:
1. Cleanse with a gel cleanser
2. Toner
3. Serum
4. Face cream with SPF

In the evening, I take a little longer:
1. Remove make-up with oil cleanser
2. Serum
3. Face oil
4. Serum and cream on décolleté, arms and hands

What keeps you inspired — in life, business or beauty?

In my private life, it sounds corny, but it's all about relationships. Whether with friends, family or a chance encounter with strangers, nothing makes me happier than interacting with people. Preferably over a good meal! Professionally, cities inspire me the most. I love to travel and discover new beauty brands, concepts or great stores.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned while running your own business?

You don't have to do everything that others do. Comparing yourself to others makes you
unhappy. Growth is not always a positive development. Making decisions on your own
can be stressful. Find yourself a sparring partner.

Favourite morning ritual:

Lemon water, dental floss, dog walk.

Being an entrepreneur can be full-on — do you have any holistic practices or habits that help you stay grounded?

Eat, pray, love.

Best skincare advice you’ve ever received:

Focus on strengthening your skin barrier with ingredients like ceramides, and use sunscreen – ideally mineral sunscreens if you have sensitive skin.

What’s your favourite wellness splurge?

Massages, massages, massages.

Always on your night stand:

Calming Blue Balm from Raaw Alchemy and The Good Night from This Place

What’s next for Oh You Pretty Things?

Everything should remain as it is because there is nothing I could have wished for more.
